Animation Course in Kathmandu

The People & the Course

18 Nepalese students attended the course, most were studying at the Centre for Art and Design, Kathmandu University, but a few came from outside the school.

The course content was aimed to give the students the basic knowledge to go through an animation production. please click on the document to enlarge.

15th day: The Final Film Presentation

The 15th day of the course we invited people to the presentation and screening of the 3 films produced by the students.

The room was turned into an exhibition of all the things we had been through during the 2,5 weeks, and we had a full audience.

14th day: Finishing animation, sound & edit

The 14th day was the last of production and all groups were working hard to finish animation, sound and editing.

13th day: Animation

The 13th day was all about animation, the people who weren't animating kept busy with sound, editing, or finishing props for animation.

12th day: Animation

The 12th day was spent on animating and alongside finishing props and characters for the last scenes.

11th day: Preparing and start animation

The 11th day was spent on finishing the last things for animation, and getting started under the camera.

At the end of the day we all went to see the exhibition of Sujan Chitrakar, teacher and coordinator at The Centre for Art and Design, Kathmandu University.

10th day: Preparation for production

On the 10th day the groups finalized animatics and prepared to start animation. Sets and characters had to be build or cut out and the cameras were tested.

9th day: Design and preparation for production

On the 9th day the groups devided the work so that some did concept/design and others did storyboard/animatic.

8th day: Storyboard and animatic

The 8th day started with an anouncement of the 3 chosen ideas, and groups were formed. We had a storyboard and animatic lecture and the preproduction began.

7th day: Idea collages and Pitch

The 7th day the students had to put their film idea into a collage and by the end of the day pitch for the rest of the class. The 3 ideas that got most votes would be the ones that got animated into short films.

4th day: Storytelling, folding- drawings and stories

The 4th day started with a storytelling lecture, then we made folding- drawings and stories as a group. at 2pm we all went to the KIMFF festival for the animation screening.

We analysed the story structure and arc of the short film "How to Cope with Death"

3rd day: flipbook and idea development

On the 3rd day the students started animating a bouncing ball in a flipbook, later we had an idea and concept -development class. By the end of the day we did "doodle-title-summary" and doodle in pairs -excercises.

2nd day: Animation with Clay & Chalk

The 2nd day we started with a lecture on animation history, showed film examples and did an exercise with the first animation "illutions": a Thaumatrope and a Zoetrope.

We also experimented with clay and chalk animation.

1st day: Animation Jam

The 1st day started with an introduction to eachother and to the course.
Then we divided the 18 students into 2 groups to make an "Animation Jam". The theme was "Jolly" and from that, two very creative films were made in 4 hours.
